Situated in the former industrial Luxembourg district of Hollerich, this new, ecologically designed apartment building will be a significant contribution to the up and coming neighbourhood. The generous glazing and terraces will offer natural light and outdoor space. It will be an escape from the surrounding dense urban area.
The earth-toned brick and stone facade is calming with its neutral colours and tactile surface. The bricks are reminescent of the industrial history of the area, and because they are modular, there are appealing patterns and textures in the facade. Bricks are also very well suited for the Luxembourg climate because they are resilient to the dampness of fall and winter.
The urban density posed many challenges that were overcome with this design. The small footprint of the site (140 m2) was maximised and a very efficient vertical circulation system means 9 apartments will be in the building; 3 studios, 3 one-bedroom, 2 three-bedroom and a penthouse with two bedrooms and a large terrace.
The LENOZ certification issued by the federal government of Luxembourg verifies that a residential building project is not only energy efficient and built with sustainable materials and processes, but that it supports social objectives, minimizes land use, is integrated with public transportation and offers a high quality of living as well.
There are six categories with 37 themes and 143 criteria that the building is evaluated on. The six categories are: Building Site, Societal, Economic, Ecological, Building and Technology and Functional. Once the criteria have been thoroughly assessed, the building is given a rating based on how well it meets the expectations. Class 1 is the highest followed by Class 2, Class 3, and Class 4. The certification will be awarded only after completion of construction.
